MN Concrete Forum: MnDOT’s Experience With High Performance Concrete Bridge Decks & Reinforcement
55 people registered to attend this presenation that was given by Ed Lutgen, MnDOT Bridge Construction & Maintenance Engineer.
This presentation encompassed the past, present, and future regarding MnDOT bridge decks. It started with a brief history then moved onto the evolution of MnDOT’s low slump concrete overlay program. It also discussed high-performance bridge deck mixes including pozzolans like silica fume and fly ash along with mixes with a low cement content, fibers and lightweight sand to produce internal curing. In addition, the progression in reinforcement types from uncoated or black bar reinforcement to galvanized, epoxy-coated rebars then to stainless steel and finally glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars was covered.
