MN Concrete Forum: The Super Air Meter - MnDOT's Experience

"The Super Air Meter - MnDOT’s Experience" was presented by Maria Masten, P.E. (Minnesota Department of Transportation)

The Super Air Meter (SAM) is emerging as a new field test for measuring the total air content in the plastic concrete as well as calculating a SAM number which correlates to the spacing factor as determined by ASTM C457.  AASHTO has approved provisional test method AASHTO TP118-17, Standard Method of Test for Characterization of the Air-Void System of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Sequential Pressure Method.

Masten discussed MnDOT’s investigation of the Super Air Meter over the previous three years of construction projects.  In addition, she will laid out MnDOT’s vision for implementation of the SAM as well as MnDOT’s movement towards Performance Engineered Concrete Mix Designs for concrete paving projects.
