Concrete Adhesive Anchor
Adhesive Anchor Installer
An Adhesive Anchor Installer is an individual who has demonstrated the ability to read, comprehend, and execute instructions to install adhesive anchors in concrete properly. The Adhesive Anchor Installer must also demonstrate possession of the knowledge to properly assess ambient conditions, concrete condition, materials, equipment, and tools for installing adhesive anchors and determine when it is appropriate to proceed with installation of an adhesive anchor or when additional guidance from a supervisor/foreman/project engineer is needed.
Scope and Knowledge:
This program requires demonstrating the knowledge and hands-on skills covered in the Job Task Analysis (JTA) for Adhesive.
Anchor Installer:
Job Task Analysis (JTA) for ACI Adhesive Anchor Installer Certification.
The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge and skills that may be included in the examinations for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exams.
Certification Requirements:
ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who obtain a passing grade on both the written examination and performance examinations.
The 90-minute written examination is closed-book and consists of 75 multiple-choice questions. To pass, the examinee must attain a minimum score of 74%.
The performance examination consists of two parts: Part 1 (vertical down) and Part 2 (vertical up):
In Part 1, each examinee will be tasked with selecting, assembling, and using the proper tools, equipment, and materials to drill and clean a vertical downhole in concrete, inject adhesive, and set an anchor to the proper depth and perpendicularity. The Examiner(s) will observe and evaluate the examinees’ performance for proper procedure.
In Part 2, each examinee must inject clear tubes with adhesive in a vertical up orientation behind a blind to simulate a drilled hole in concrete; one tube is injected using the retaining cap method, and one tube is injected using the piston plug method. The Examiner(s) will observe and evaluate the examinees’ performance for proper procedure.
Following Part 1, the Examiner(s) will check the vertical down installation for proper depth and plumb; after the adhesive in the tubes injected in Part 2 has cured, the Examiner(s) will cross-section them and evaluate the size and location of air voids to determine pass or fail. This program now certifies candidates in either OR both of the “overhead” installation systems (retaining cap and piston plug).
A set of instructions appropriate for the exam and applicable Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) will be available for the examinee to consult during both parts of the performance exam. Both parts of the performance exam must be completed within one year, or the entire performance examination must be re-taken.
Recertification is necessary every five years and requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.

Post-Installed Concrete Anchor Installation Inspector
A certified Post-Installed Concrete Anchor Installation Inspector* is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge required to properly inspect the installation of post-installed adhesive and mechanical anchors in concrete. The Inspector must understand the installer’s responsibilities and qualification requirements, inspection requirements as cited in the documents governing the project’s construction, and the process governing the qualification of anchor systems.
*This expanded program includes and covers all of the Adhesive Anchor Installation Inspector program materials; certification candidates are now directed to this program for concrete anchor inspection certification.
Scope and Knowledge:
This program requires a demonstration of the knowledge covered in the Job Task Analysis (JTA) for Post-Installed Concrete Anchor Installation Inspector:
Job Task Analysis (JTA) for ACI Post-Installed Concrete Anchor Installation Inspector Certification
The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge that may be included in the examinations for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exams.
Certification Requirements:
ACI will grant certification only to applicants who attain passing grades on the ACI written examinations and attend an adhesive anchor installation practice session. The session must include vertical down and vertical up installations utilizing both system types (retaining cap and piston plug). These sessions are available through ACI Certification Sponsoring Groups.
The forty-five-minute installation examination is closed-book and consists of approximately 45 multiple-choice questions. To pass, the examinee must attain a minimum score of 74%.
The two-hour inspection examination is open-book and consists of approximately 90 multiple-choice questions. To pass the installation examination, the examinee must attain a minimum score of 60% on each subsection and an overall score of 70%.
