1/28/21 | Pumping Air Entrained Concrete and the Super Air Meter | Tyler Ley Ph.D., P.E. - Professor at Oklahoma State University | 1 Hour |

The work shows that during pumping the air volume will decrease and if measured immediately after pumping will be lower than what is found in the final concrete. These findings are supported by hardened air void analysis, freeze thaw tests, and measurement of the air void volume and spacing over time in the fresh concrete with the Super Air Meter. The presentation makes recommendations for modifications to the current testing specifications based on the findings. |

2/3/21 | Building More than Just the Pedestal: An Owner/Developer’s Perspective on Building All Concrete Multifamily Mid-Rise | Ryan Bedford (Bedford Development) | 1 Hour |
Part of the Sustainable Structures Webinar Ser… Part of the Sustainable Structures Webinar Series: Look around and you’ll see many five to seven story projects being built today with a one- or two-story concrete pedestal, supporting up to five floors of steel or wood frame. These “pedestal” projects are assumed to be the cheapest way to build while longer term ownership implications of these designs are not well understood. This one-hour presentation dispels the myths that are driving the popularity of pedestal construction and demonstrates the value concrete provides. The developer/owner’s perspective on building multi-family housing projects with Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) will be presented, and will include design, construction, and energy-efficiency implications, as well as tenant satisfaction. The presenter will overview his use of ICF’s and concrete for the exterior wall system at Kendal Lofts, a 42-unit project in Waukesha, Wisconsin. In addition, the presenter will also discuss his latest all-concrete residential projects in Wisconsin and Florida. |

Examples range from well-documented, high-profile collapses to lesser known but similarly influential structural and serviceability problems. Case histories will include discussion of excessive cracking, the cause of such distress, and mitigation measures. The case histories will illustrate how small details can often mean the difference between success and disappointment; and how codes have evolved to reduce the risk of future failures. |

Concrete is the foundation for everything we build. Concrete is an integ… Concrete is the foundation for everything we build. Concrete is an integral part of homes, businesses, schools, offices, churches, roads, and bridges. The concrete industry is in need of people who aren't afraid of hard work. A career in the concrete industry not only pays well but gives individuals the chance to build something that will stand the test of time. Right now, there is a growing need for concrete contractors, equipment operators, ready mix concrete truck drivers and quality control personnel. #ConcreteTough is a Nebraska based workforce recruitment campaign that exposes youth to the concrete construction industry. This message is communicated through participating in various career fairs, concrete 101 programs, and presented to numerous schools on the different careers the concrete Industry offers. Attendees will learn ways that they can incorporate concrete career awareness into their own workforce recruitment efforts. A short overview of the new Concrete Industry Management degree at South Dakota State University will also be included with this webinar. |

ACI 207.1R defines mass concrete as any volume of concrete with dimensions large enough to require that measures be taken to cope with the generation of heat from hydration of the cement and attendant volume change to minimize cracking. But how does one predict whether mass concrete problems will occur and what steps should be taken? This presentation will discuss how to identify mass concrete, ACI 301 requirements pertaining to it, and good construction practices. |

4/22/21 | Mass Concrete Constructability | Oscar R. Antommattei, MS, PE, FACI (Chief Concrete Engineer & Materials Engineering Manager, Kiewit) | 1 Hour |
Mass concrete (or thermally controlled concrete) typically requires impl… Mass concrete (or thermally controlled concrete) typically requires implementing thermal control measures to reduce maximum temperature and mitigate temperature difference. Specified temperature limits and thermal control requirements can affect mix design proportions, materials selection, reinforcement details, construction operations and compliance to specifications for the work. Many specifications still limit concrete temperatures to overly conservative default values without recognizing concrete properties and performance that allow alternative temperature limits more suitable for the specified work while maintaining quality and improving constructability. This issue frequently results in challenging scenarios that create design difficulties and unnecessary constructability problems for mass concrete. This presentation focuses on the implementation of today’s knowledge of mass concrete and best practices to overcome mass concrete challenges and facilitate solutions in projects. A special emphasis will be given to the technical updates provided for mass concrete requirements and guidance progressing in North America industry standards. |

Design professionals and contractors have a greater influence on concrete formulation than they do with other building products. Concrete can be made stronger, lighter, more flowable, stiffer, less permeable, and even weaker depending on performance needs. No other building material is that versatile. This presentation will discuss how design and construction teams can implement ten simple strategies to reduce concrete’s carbon footprint today. The recommendations are listed broadly in order of priority, but not in order of impact reduction. All are important and should be implemented. In addition, the strategies are meant to achieve a lower carbon footprint without impacting other desired performance capabilities for the concrete. |
