FIBER REINFORCED CONCRETE BOWLING BALL REGIONAL COMPETITION
ACI's internationally recognized student competitions, typically offered in cooperation with the ACI Student Activities Committee, give students the opportunity to participate in interesting and educational concrete projects. The Minnesota Concrete Council, a Local Chapter of ACI, will hold a regional FRC Bowling Ball competition.
Objectives: The objective of both competitions is to demonstrate the behavior of fiber reinforcement within concrete, to gain experience in forming and fabricating a fiber-reinforced concrete element, and to encourage creativity with compliance in engineering design and analysis.
Competition: The ACI 2024 FRC Bowling Ball rules are below. The Chapter rules are subject to change based on the number of teams who participate.
Prizes:
First ($500), and second ($250) place prizes will be awarded to the highest scoring student teams. MCC Member and Student winning teams will each receive a medal and a certificate of recognition. Further recognition will be given on MCC’s social media and e-blast communications.

Change is Constant, Concrete is Forever
Description: With sustainability at the forefront of our worldwide discussion, practitioners need to understand that concrete and materials are forever going to be evolving and what our grandparents once knew as concrete will constantly be changing. This presentation will focus on the anticipated changes to materials, mixture designs, construction practices and acceptance specifications that will be needed now and into the future.
Presenter: Peter Taylor, PhD (Director, National CP Tech Center)
Engineer as Vicar : Navigating while an expert or administrator
In practice we are often called to act for others as technical experts, administrators, employees and representatives of others. In specifications, submittals, designs, expert advice, investigation and in representing the public. These actions bring forward a grave responsibility that can be a heavy burden. Frequently the only judge of how well this is done is ourselves.
A discussion of the ethics and responsibilities of a vicar - one who acts in lieu of another- will involve real life examples, an examination of the times we are vicars and how to keep up our panache in the face of difficulty.
Presenter: Kevin MacDonald, PhD, PE, P.Eng, FACI

History of Concrete - How it Started
Concrete is the second most used material in the world, only exceeded by water. It is also one of our oldest construction materials starting thousands of years ago. It continues to evolve and allows us to make the tallest buildings, bridges, and roadways.
So how did our ancestors find out that if we heated rocks, we could make cement and then make concrete? How did we discover the multi-step process of making our modern concrete?
This presentation will take us through the journey of how cement and concrete developed. Along this journey, we will see how the discovery of fire, bricks, pottery, pyramids, and lighthouses played a major role in the development of concrete.
Presenter: Luke M. Snell, P.E., FACI, Honorary Member -ACI Concrete Consultant
